Julie Zilber

Julie Zilber is Co-Director of 7TH FLOOR MEDIA and a University Research Associate (faculty researcher) at Simon Fraser University. 7TH FLOOR MEDIA is English Canada’s only new media research, design, and development centre focused exclusively on the creation of educational and cultural content.

Julie joined 7TH FLOOR MEDIA in 1990. A former lawyer specializing in intellectual property law, she has led many internal and external teams researching, designing and developing world-leading new media projects for both formal and informal learning environments.

An expert in human-centred design and user experience analysis, Julie has addressed audiences ranging from educators to industry leaders to key government representatives, both at home and abroad, on the subject of new technologies and their impact on education, and has provided research and advice to government, institutions, and corporations in Canada and the Asia–Pacific region on the implementation of technology-enhanced learning initiatives.

In 1996 Julie was integral in “spinning out” a new Internet technology company, NCompass Labs Inc., to commercialize software technology originally developed by 7TH FLOOR MEDIA. Five years later, NCompass Labs was purchased by Microsoft, and its software was renamed “Microsoft Content Management Server.”

Julie has a BA from Simon Fraser University, an LLB from the University of British Columbia, and completed the course work for a PhD at Simon Fraser University in 1998.
