ESL Tutor (Grammar Analyzer)
The ESL Tutor is designed to enhance the learning experience offered by
online language courses. Its features include:
- Error-specific feedback: Numerous studies in second-language acquisition have shown that students learn better with error-specific feedback (i.e., feedback that identifies the particular error they are making). Most language systems can do little more than tell the student whether the sentences they construct are “right” or “wrong.” The ESL Tutor can identify the actual grammatical error that the student is making.
- Feedback modulation: Advanced students don’t need detailed corrections if they make a careless error. The ESL Tutor understands a student’s skill level and will modify its feedback to suit the current skill level of the student. An individual student will receive detailed feedback for areas where she is weak, and will receive less detailed feedback in areas where she is strong. The result is a more personalized approach, similar to that when working with a human tutor.
- Advice/Prompting: The ESL Tutor keeps track of a student’s strengths and weaknesses. Hence, the system can provide advice to the student concerning areas where the student should practice more.
